Efficiency rules considered for energy-hungry Northern Territory buildings | ABC News
Australia's smallest - and hottest - capital city has a big problem with energy consumption for air-conditioning. The Territory government recently announced plans for minimum standards for energy efficiency, which have been in place across the rest of the country for years. But researchers say more needs to be done, or energy use will only climb as the climate changes.

Energy Revolution in the Northern Territory
A company working in the Northern Territory’s fracking industry says it could be producing gas within three years in what some are describing as an energy revolution.
Liquids-rich gas was discovered in shale on the edge of the state’s Beetaloo Basin and Empire Energy is about to conduct its first vertical frack at the Carpentaria-1 site - 850 kilometres south east of Darwin - after drilling a well last October.
The shale gas industry transformed the American energy market in the first part of the century, and it is hoped Australia could reap similar benefits from the Beetaloo Basin.
While the federal government has identified the gas below the Beetaloo as a key part of Australia’s post-COVID economic recovery, environmentalists have raised concerns over the risk to local water sources...

ABC News: Could this tiny town in the Northern Territory hold the key to Australia's energy future?
EDL is playing our part on Australia’s decarbonisation journey, helping regional, remote and Indigenous communities like Jabiru in the Northern Territory transition to reliable, renewable power.
Since opening in 2022, our Jabiru Hybrid Renewable Microgrid, in conjunction with Power and Water Corporation and the Northern Territory Government, has dramatically increased electricity reliability for Jabiru’s 1,000 residents. The town is now powered by 100% solar power during the day and over 50% renewable energy across the year—reducing annual diesel use by 1.7 million litres and significantly decreasing carbon emissions.
In this ABC News story featuring EDL’s General Manager Remote Energy Geoff Hobley, find out how Jabiru is a crucial stepping stone for our ultimate goal of 100% renewable e...

Northern Territory solar farms not meeting demand
Three huge solar farms in the Northern Territory have finally been connected to the electricity grid more than four years after they were built.
The three farms at Manton Dam, Batchelor and Katherine, south of Darwin, were finally connected to the grid late last year.
However, only one is providing power and it is running at just 25 per cent of its capacity.
The problem is the intermittent nature of the power being generated – if there is too much when there is too little demand, it can trip the system.
If the power, being generated, drops too quickly – such as when clouds cover the sun – it can also cause chaos.

While the federal government has identified the gas below the Beetaloo as a key part of Australia’s post-COVID economic recovery, environmentalists have raised concerns over the risk to local water sources and the increased emissions from fracking.
However, the Northern Territory’s Labor government is backing the industry in despite other state governments putting restrictions and even bans on onshore gas.
